Coast LED Camp Light

Coast LED Camp Light / Tent Light / Safety Light:: These devices are basically small LED flashlights with a refractor device screwed into the light source to provide generalized lighting. They can be used for a soft tent light glow and they can be carried as a safety device at night. The devices work relativity well but beware of claims by some reviewers that they are indestructible because they use LED's. LEDs do fail and LEDs do come loose from the circuit board they are soldered to.

If you drop one of these devices, the plastic (polycarbonate) refractor tube will likely snap off at the base. It happened to us while playing with one of the units. (pictures coming soon)

The refractor "bar" unscrews from the unit to make carrying a little easier.

The other weakness is the rubber cap on the push on/off button is relatively thin and can easily be snagged or torn loose from the switch. It is still connected but flapping in two of our test units. Coast supplied a spare rubber push button cover underneath the battery spring. (pictures coming soon)

In a pinch, the refractor bar can be unscrewed and the 3 LED light source can be used as a more intense light source but there is no general reflector so it doesn't really work as a flashlight. Cooling air holes for the LED's expose the unit to moisture which could be a problem if camping in rainy environments

The nylon lanyard is useful for hanging from the tent ceiling or wrapping around your wrist to prevent dropping the device when carrying. We would suggest a small carabineer or perhaps one of the NiteIze light-use carabineers to hang it up. The units are recommended but you should take under consideration the weaknesses stated.

We also have a unit which has a single red LED which may either be on, off, slow flash, fast flash. The units are very similar but it appears Coast has used a different screw on battery cap design on the two devices. (pictures coming soon)

Note: The units that we tested had 3 - 1.5v n-cells rather than 2AA batteries. We are attempting to determine if there was a model change or if this was printed by mistake at the supplier below.. n-cells are a little more difficult to come by.
